Bringing Three Generations Under One Roof

A family together in the courtyard of Masjid an-Nabawi

Grandparents, parents and children in the same residence for a month — how families divide the month, and what they wish they had known.

The month belongs to you, which means it also belongs to whoever you give it to. Some families take the whole thing together. More split it — a fortnight for the parents and children in the school holidays, a fortnight for the grandparents when the city is quieter.

How families divide it

  • Two halves, one for each side of the family, arranged a year ahead.
  • A full month once every few years, and dated stays given away in between.
  • Grandparents in the cooler months, everyone together in the summer.

What families tell us they wish they had known is simply to decide earlier. The month is fixed and yours, but flights, schools and work are not, and the households that agree the shape of the year in advance get more out of it.
